Bad band names

Is it a good name for a band? The Department of Doubt has heard 17 band names, all invented here, and stamped every one I DON'T THINK SO. Tap any name to stamp it, then send it to the friend whose band still has no name.

Sounds like an email

  1. Reply All. Every fan who shares it starts a thread nobody can leave.
  2. The Unsubscribe Button. Fans will try to click it, and most will succeed.
  3. Out of Office. Promoters will assume you are on holiday and book someone else.
  4. Per My Last Email. It sounds passive-aggressive before the first chord.
  5. Read Receipt. Now everyone knows you saw the bad review.

Impossible to search for

  1. Band Name Pending. It reads like a placeholder because it is one, forever.
  2. A band called Music. Search results: all of it. Your band: page 400.
  3. Untitled Document 4. Fans will ask what happened to Documents 1 to 3.
  4. A band called Song. Try telling a friend to listen to Song by Song.

Too long for the poster

  1. The Terms and Conditions Apply in Selected Regions Only. Nobody will read it to the end, which is a bit too accurate.
  2. Seventeen Spoons and a Very Small Ladder. The poster needs a second poster.
  3. Please Remember to Rate This Concert Five Stars. Asking for a review before anyone has heard a note.
  4. Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Running Slightly Late. The presenter says it and the crowd thinks the show is delayed.

Hard to say out loud

  1. A band called Xqzzt. Nobody can say it, so nobody can recommend it.
  2. The Silent Letters. A name about being quiet, for a band that wants to be heard.
  3. Mmmm (four Ms). Fans will argue about the number of Ms forever.
  4. A Name We Will Explain Later. You will be explaining it at every gig, forever.

What makes a band name work

  1. It is short. Posters and wristbands thank you.
  2. People can say it. And spell it after hearing it once.
  3. You can search for it. Music is taken.
  4. Nobody else has it. Check before you print the T-shirts.

Questions about bad band names

What makes a band name bad?

It is impossible to search for, impossible to say out loud, too long for a poster, or it sounds like an email setting: names like Reply All, The Terms and Conditions or Untitled Document 4.

How do you pick a good band name?

Short, easy to say, easy to spell after hearing it once, and not already taken. Search it first, then say it in a loud room and see if anyone can repeat it.

Are these real bands?

No. Every name on this page is invented by the Department of Doubt. If a real band has one of these names, it is a coincidence and no comment on them.

Part of Bad ideas, officially reviewed.
