Department of DoubtForm 74: Early departure request

Funny excuses to leave a party

You came, you talked, you ate the small sausages. Now you would like to go home. Here are 15 funny excuses to leave a party, all invented, all harmless, and every one reviewed and stamped I DON'T THINK SO by the Department of Doubt. Tap any excuse to stamp it yourself.

The home front needs me

  1. My houseplants get anxious if I am back after ten. Houseplants do not check the time. They barely check the light.
  2. I left the radio on and it will be lonely. The radio has the whole country to talk to.
  3. My cat is expecting a full report and I need time to write it. The cat will read the summary only.
  4. I promised my bed I would be home early tonight. Your bed made no such request. It is very patient.
  5. My slippers have been waiting by the door all evening. Touching. Not urgent.

Strange but technically true

  1. I have reached my limit of small talk for this year. Honest. The Department respects it, but does not approve it.
  2. My social battery is at one percent and there is no charger here. There is a sofa. Sofas are chargers.
  3. I have to get up early tomorrow to do nothing, and I need to be rested for it. Admirable planning. Rejected anyway.
  4. I need to get home before my good mood wears off. A good mood is a reason to stay.
  5. I told myself I would leave at a reasonable hour and I am a person of my word. Nobody believes this, including you.

Bold, confident and wrong

  1. I am leaving while I am still the most interesting person here. The Department has doubts about the ranking.
  2. I have another party, which is my sofa. True of most parties. Not an excuse.
  3. I am going to go and miss you all from a distance. Sweet. Still leaving before the cake.
  4. I would stay, but I have already said goodbye once and I cannot do it twice. You can. Everyone does.
  5. My taxi is outside. It has been outside for an hour. It is my car. Your car does not count as a taxi.

What actually works

You do not need an excuse to leave a party. You need about ten seconds and a host:

  1. Find the host. Not the whole room, just the person who invited you.
  2. Thank them for one specific thing. "The dip was excellent." Specific sounds sincere.
  3. Say you are going. "I'm going to head home." No reason required.
  4. Then go. The long goodbye at the door is how ten seconds becomes forty minutes.

If they are smiling, add the joke: "My houseplants are expecting me." Rule of the Department: never invent an emergency or an illness to get out. It worries people, and it is the excuse they remember.

Not going at all?

Questions about leaving a party

What is a funny excuse to leave a party?

One so obviously made up that it doubles as a polite goodbye, like "my houseplants will worry if I am back after ten". It works with friends who know you. With a host you do not know well, a short honest line is safer.

How do you leave a party early without being rude?

Find the host, thank them for something specific, say you are heading off, and go. "Thanks for having me, the food was great, I'm going to head home." No long reason needed. Leaving quietly is fine at big parties; at small ones, say goodbye.

Should I make up an excuse to leave a party?

You do not need one. "I'm going to head off, thanks so much" is a complete sentence. If you use a joke excuse, make it clearly a joke. Never invent an emergency or an illness: people worry, and they remember.

Is it OK to leave a party without saying goodbye?

At a large, busy party it is usually fine. At a small gathering, or if you came with someone, tell at least the host or your friend that you are going, so nobody wonders where you went.
